HSA Eligibility

To be eligible for a Health Savings Account, you must match the following requirements:

  • You are covered by a High Deductible Health Plan (HDHP)3
  • You have no other health coverage except what is permitted under “Other health coverage,” listed on IRS.gov
  • You are not enrolled in Medicare
  • You are not claimed as a dependent on another person’s tax return

3 High Deductible Health Plan. For calendar year 2021, a “High Deductible Health Plan” is defined under § 223(c)(2)(A) as a health plan with an annual deductible that is not less than $1,400 for self-only coverage or $2,800 for family coverage, and the annual out-of-pocket expenses (deductibles, co-payments, and other amounts, but not premiums) not to exceed $7,000 for self-only coverage or $14,000 for family coverage.

4 HSA contribution limits for single coverage 2021: $3,600 and 2020: $3,550. Family coverage 2021: $7,200 and 2020: $7,100. Add $1,000 for age 55 or older. Consult a tax advisor regarding tax deductibility.
